The Florida Forest Service offers camping discounts for individuals age 65 and older, active-duty military or honorably discharged veterans, and for individuals 100% disabled at applicable camping facilities on Florida's State Forests. If you qualify for any of these discounts, please call the Reserve America Call Center at (877) 879-3859 and provide the appropriate document number (e.g., driver's license number; military ID number) to have the documentation added and your profile updated. Once this is complete, your discount will automatically apply upon checkout. The Florida Forest Service reserves the right to verify documentation provided to Reserve America.

Description

Kirkland Hammock Primitive Campsite is located on the Belle Meade Tract of Picayune Strand State Forest. Picayune Strand State Forest is located in Collier County, approximately 8 miles east of Naples, FL. There are 2 campsites that are available for reservation online. There is no potable water or electric facilities at these two primitive campsites. Access to these campsites is on trails by hike, bike or horseback. Access to campsite is via forest trails not suitable for non-4-wheel drive vehicles. Visitors with non-4-wheel drive vehicles can access the site by foot or horse. Access trails are under water during the wet season. Recreational activities featured here are: horseback riding, picnicking, off road biking, bird watching, wildlife viewing and hiking.

Geography:

Picayune Strand State Forest is the fourth largest state forest in Florida and is named after the largest of several cypress strands that once occupied much of the eastern portion of the property. The 74,168-acre forest is comprised of two tracts, the South Golden Gates Estates Tract to the east and the Belle Meade Tract to the west.

Picayune Strand State Forest is in the heart of the Big Cypress Basin. The majority of this hydric forest is under water during the wet season. The forest is a mosaic of cypress strands, wet prairie and pine flatwoods in the lowlands and subtropical hardwood hammocks in the uplands. The northern section of the Belle Meade Tract contains many second-growth South Florida slash pine, with some remnant trees being over 100 years old!

Recreation:

The Picayune Strand State Forest, Belle Meade Tract provides equestrians with a 22-mile trail that is included in the Florida Forest Service, Trailtrotter Program. The Horseshoe Equestrian Group Camp adjacent to the forest office serves as the eastern trailhead for the trail. Please note that all horses on the forest must have current negative Coggins test results, proof of which is to be carried by each rider at all times. In addition, there are opportunities for hiking and off road biking.

  • Cancellations can be made on the website and through the call center.
  • 1 or more days prior to arrival: $9 non-refundable cancellation fee.
  • Day of or after arrival, must be cancelled through the call center.
  • $9.00 plus the 1st night's use fee.
  • After the arrival date, $9 non-refundable cancellation fee, fees for the nights following the call will be refunded. No same night refunds.

Refunds:

  • Credit Card refunds are automatically credited back to the original credit card and will take up to 3 - 5 business days to appear on the customer's statement.
  • The State Forest campgrounds cannot process refunds for reservations processed online or through the call center.
  • The State Forest can process refunds for cash or check payments made through walk-in office reservations and walk-up campsites. State Forest do not process any credit card refunds.

Access to these campsites is on trails by vehicle, hike, bike or horseback. Access by vehicle to the campsite is on trails not suitable for non-4-wheel drive vehicles. Visitors with non-4-wheel drive vehicles can access the site by foot or horse. Access trails are under water during the wet season. Make sure to yield to horses when on the trails and watch for other users. From Naples/Fort Myers/Tampa: Drive on I-75 and take exit 111. Head east on Immokalee Blvd. for 8 miles in the direction of Cork, then turn right onto Randall Boulevard. Continue on Randall Boulevard for 3.4 miles, then turn right on Everglades Boulevard. Continue on Everglades Boulevard for 9.4 miles, then turn right onto 52nd Avenue. After 1 mile, the forest office will be on your right and continue for another half mile until the 4 way stop sign is reached for Miller Blvd. Turn left to head south on Miller Blvd. for ¼ mile and turn right onto 54th Ave. SE. Follow 54th Ave. SE . for 1/3 of a mile (including a hard right where the road ends at driveways) until the blue trail is visible on the left. Follow the blue trail for 2 miles following the signs pointing to Kirkland Hammock campsites. From the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area, drive on I-75 NOrth from Miami, take exit 80 to merge onto SR-29 North. Continue on SR 29 for 10 miles, then turn left onto Oil Well Road. Continue on Oil Well Road for 12.7 miles, then turn left onto Everglades Boulevard. Continue on Everglades Boulevard for 10.5 miles, then turn right onto 52nd Avenue. After 1 mile, the forest office will be on your right and continue for another half mile until the 4 way stop sign is reached for Miller Blvd. Turn left to head south on Miller Blvd. for ¼ mile and turn right onto 54th Ave. SE. Follow 54th Ave. SE . for 1/3 of a mile (including a hard right where the road ends at driveways) until the blue trail is visible on the left.
