Overview

Description

Myakka State Forest Primitive Campsites are within the Myakka State Forest (Sarasota County), about 1-hour south of Sarasota, FL. It includes 4 separate campsites including Myakka River, Flatwoods, Watering Hole and Pine Straw. These primitive campsites are scattered throughout the state forest and have no water or electric facilities. All sites are hike in and hike out only, except the River 1 site which has boat and paddle access also. Recreational activities featured include: fishing, picnicking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, paddling and hiking.

Geography:

Myakka State Forest includes 2.5 miles of frontage on the Myakka River, which is designated as an Outstanding Florida Water (OFW) and a Wild and Scenic River. Myakkahatchee Creek flows through the forest for 1.5 miles providing an additional water resource. The terrestrial portion is made up primarily of mesic flatwoods with a mixture of mature longleaf pine and slash pine. Numerous depression marshes are scattered throughout the flatwoods, providing many opportunities for viewing wading birds and other wildlife. Recreation:

Myakka State Forest offers camping, hiking, off-road bicycling, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. There are over 40 miles of trail that are open to hiking, trail biking, and equestrian activities. The forest trails are included in the Florida Forest Service's Trailwalker Hiking Program as well as horse trails in the Trailtrotter Equestrian Program. The Myakka River passes through the forest and hiking trails provide access to riverfront camping, fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. Cancellations:

  • Cancellations can be made on the website and through the call center.
  • 1 or more days prior to arrival: $9 non-refundable cancellation fee.
  • Day of or after arrival, must be cancelled through the call center.
  • $9.00 plus the 1st night's use fee.
  • After the arrival date, $9 non-refundable cancellation fee, fees for the nights following the call will be refunded. No same night refunds.

    Refunds:

  • Credit Card refunds are automatically credited back to the original credit card and will take up to 3 - 5 business days to appear on the customer's statement.
  • The State Forest campgrounds cannot process refunds for reservations processed online or through the call center.
  • The State Forest can process refunds for cash or check payments made through walk-in office reservations and walk-up campsites. State Forest do not process any credit card refunds.

    Take Exit 191 off of I75. Go south toward Englewood for 9.5 miles, the forest entrance is on the left. Upon entering the forest, continue on for 1.2 miles and Trailhead Parking will be on the left. Parking for these campsites is at the trailhead on the left past the Ranger's Station. Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. Hiking distance to each campsite is:
    • Myakka River Campsite: approximately 3.2 miles via the North Loop trail (or 2.4 miles from East River Road parking lot)
    • Flatwoods Campsite: approximately 1.9 miles via the North Loop trail
    • Watering Hole Campsite: approximately 1.5 miles via the South Loop, then Foresman trail
    • Pine Straw Campsite: approximately 2.5 miles via the South Loop trail
    Seasonally parts of the trail will be muddy and/or have standing water.
  • Mangrover Campsite. Approximately 3.3 miles via the North Loop trail (or 2.3 miles from the East River Road parking lot)
