Overview

Description

The Picketts Bay Primitive Campsites are in Tate's Hell State Forest (Franklin County). There are five primitive campsites available: the campsites at Sunday Rollaway, Oxbow, Warren Bluff and New River#1 are tent and RV accessible and the campsite at Gully Branch #1 is tent only. These sites are 10 - 12 miles (20 - 30 minute drive) north of Carrabelle, FL. None of these primitive campsites have electricity, water, or restrooms. All five sites have close access to a river. Recreational activities featured here are: fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, picnicking, bird watching, wildlife viewing and photography.

Geography:

Located in Franklin and Liberty Counties, between the Apalachicola and Ochlockonee rivers, Tate's Hell State Forest is one continuous tract of land comprising over 202,437 acres. The natural resources found on Tate's Hell State Forest are very diverse due to the unique and various natural community types. Currently, the forest contains approximately 107,300 acres of hydric communities such as wet prairie (contains a vast diversity of plant species), wet flatwoods, strand swamp, bottomland forest, baygall and floodplain swamp. which are home to a diverse mixture of indigenous animal and plant species. Tate's Hell State Forest is home to several stands of dwarf cypress, also known as "miniature" or "hat-rack" cypress. Although some of the trees are over 150 years old, none are taller than about 15 feet. The Ralph G. Kendrick Boardwalk offers an observation tower overlooking one of the areas where these dwarf cypress trees grow most prolifically. Recreation:

Tate's Hell State Forest offers a variety of recreation activities for the outdoor enthusiast. There are 35 miles of rivers, streams, and creeks available for canoeing, boating and fishing. A concrete boat launch site is located at Cash Creek, with additional launch sites available at locations throughout the forest. Fishing requires a valid license. Picnicking at one of the many day-use areas is a popular activity and primitive campsites are dispersed throughout the forest. Cancellations:

  • Cancellations can be made on the website and through the call center.
  • 1 or more days prior to arrival: $9 non-refundable cancellation fee.
  • Day of or after arrival, must be cancelled through the call center.
  • $9.00 plus the 1st night's use fee.
  • After the arrival date, $9 non-refundable cancellation fee, fees for the nights following the call will be refunded. No same night refunds.

    Refunds:

  • Credit Card refunds are automatically credited back to the original credit card and will take up to 3 - 5 business days to appear on the customer's statement.
  • The State Forest campgrounds cannot process refunds for reservations processed online or through the call center.
  • The State Forest can process refunds for cash or check payments made through walk-in office reservations and walk-up campsites. State Forest do not process any credit card refunds.

    From US 98, turn onto River Road and travel about 4.3 mile; turn right onto Burnt Bridge Road and travel about 4 miles; turn left onto East Double Bridge Road. The campsite is about 1.6 mile ahead at the end of the road.

    11 Gully Branch:
    From CR 67, turn onto Gully Branch Road. The campsite is about 5.8 miles ahead on your left before the New River. The campsite is across from the day use pavilion.

    46 Sunday Rollaway:
    From CR 67, turn onto Gully Branch Road and travel about 1.2 mile; turn first left (onto Warren Bluff Road) and travel about 2 miles; turn onto campsite road. The campsite is about 0.45 mile ahead at the end of the road.

    47 Oxbow:
    From CR 67, turn onto Gully Branch Road and travel about 1.2 mile; turn left onto Warren Bluff Road and travel about 4 miles; turn first left (onto Forest Road 124A). The campsite is about 0.8 mile ahead on your left.

    48 Warren Bluff:
    From US 98, turn onto River Road and travel about 4.3 mile; turn right onto Burnt Bridge Road and travel about 0.35 mile; turn right onto Warren Bluff Road and travel about 2.6 miles; turn right (onto Forest Road 315A). The campsite is 0.2 mile ahead at the end of the road.
